The world of diesel engines and related technologies has become ever more complex as the emissions regulations have tightened. The industry has developed its own language of abbreviations and buzzwords that seems to expand on a daily basis. Confused? Here is a quick-and-easy guide to what they all mean.

AdBlue - The generic name for the

colourless, odourless liquid made up of Urea and water. It is used to break down the harmful NOx emissions from a diesel engine fitted with a selective catalytic reduction (see SCR) Exhaust after-treatment system.

Common-Rail - A highly-efficient fuel injection system found in modern diesel engines in which the fuel is fed into a pressurised reservoir, or ‘common rail’...
